When Mahler announced that the first movement would be rehearsed again, Rachmaninoff expected shouts of protest from the orchestra - but heard not a word of complaint. Mahler's symphonies had a military edge, a destructive energy: the territory in front of them had to be scorched and scoured for the shining towers to be erected. He married Alma Schindler (1879–1964) in 1902. But in 1982 hundreds of manuscripts by Kern and other Broadway composers were found in a warehouse in Secaucus, New Jersey.

As a conductor Mahler had a tremendous influence on musical life in Europe. The film follows his subsequent career, as he started to climb the ladder of success. You would never know it from the excellence of the results, though you might argue the character of the performance might have been influenced by the need to get in and get on with things.

One with singers was partly down to wage levels which were deemed insufficient for singers to perform just with one organization. Vienna was the city that Mahler lived and loved throughout his years, a city where he met luminaries like Hugo Wolf, Bruckner, (and Schoenberg), artists and philosophers, and a city that he was deeply connected to.

[8] The young Mahler was auditioned by the renowned pianist Julius Epstein, and accepted for 1875–76. [5] He made good progress in his piano studies with Epstein and won prizes at the end of each of his first two years.

Theatrical duties generally kept him fully occupied during these winter seasons, so that he was forced to be a "summer composer." Although nothing memorable came out of this brief association, Coots introduced Fields to another composer and song-plugger, Jimmy McHugh. Of its re-conception, Mahler commented: “I have named the first movement ‘Funeral Rite,’ and, if you are curious, it is the hero of my First Symphony that I am burying here and whose life I am gathering up in a clear mirror, from a higher vantage point.

Vivaldi, Bach, and Dvorak were ahead of Mahler, who, amazingly, outranked Rachmaninoff (#10) and even Mozart (#11), to say nothing of Verdi (#14), Puccini (#16) and Brahms (#17). Before the injury it was said that he could have become one of the greatest piano players in all of Europe. It shows the influence of Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann but, especially in its principal theme, already foreshadows later Mahlerian ideas. Like a whisper" is Mahler's marking for the trio of three women in deep sin and Horenstein observes this impressively.

He kept up a hectic, workaholic pace, running the Vienna Court Opera and later the New York Philharmonic, with only a few weeks each summer devoted to composing.

Here, he conducted his very first full-scale opera. The horn (in the treatment of which authorities agree Mahler was one of the greatest masters of all time) had never had so important a role. Their second daughter, Anna, was born later in 1904. Having noticed the boy's talent at an early age, his parents arranged piano lessons for him when he was six years old.
